Fire Extinguisher Inspection Logs, with a Free Template
The extinguisher on the wall is either ready or decoration, and the difference is a sixty-second monthly check that most buildings skip.
Extinguisher upkeep runs on a rhythm from NFPA 10 and OSHA’s workplace rule: a monthly visual check, in place, charged, sealed, unobstructed, undamaged; an annual maintenance with a recorded date; and periodic hydrostatic testing by cycle. The monthly check takes a minute per unit, the log proves the rhythm, and inspections ask for exactly that.
The rhythm
| When | What | Who |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | Visual check per unit | Anyone competent the employer designates |
| Annually | Maintenance, with the date recorded | Qualified service, per NFPA 10 and state rules |
| By cycle | Hydrostatic testing on the unit’s schedule | Service provider |
| Always | Damaged or discharged units go to service now | Whoever finds it |

Annual and beyond
The annual maintenance is the professional service visit, and the date record is the piece OSHA’s rule explicitly requires kept. Hydro testing runs on multi-year cycles by extinguisher type; the service tag carries the due date, and the log tracks it so the due date stops being a surprise.
The log sheet
One sheet per unit per year: twelve monthly rows, the annual maintenance record, and the hydro due date. A binder of these is what an inspector means by “your extinguisher records.”
Extinguishers on a fire watch
Impairments lean on extinguishers harder: the guard may be the first response while systems are down. Pre-watch checks include the units on the route, and a dead gauge found on round one goes in the log and to the site contact the same hour.
Extinguisher log questions
OSHA requires the monthly visual check and the annual maintenance date record. Logging the monthlies is how you prove the rhythm existed; skipping the log invites the argument.
Anyone competent the employer designates. It is a visual check with a short list, which is exactly what the template prints.
The cycle for the extinguisher type, damage, or a failed service finding. The service tag and the log keep the schedule honest.
