The Fire Watch Plan: What It Contains, with a Free Template

When the marshal asks how the watch will run, the answer is a document, not a conversation. The plan is that document.

SHORT ANSWER

A fire watch plan states, before the watch starts: which systems are out and which areas that exposes, who was notified and when, the round interval and staffing with the route math that supports them, how the guard reaches the fire department, and who signed off. Some AHJs require a plan outright; every AHJ is easier to satisfy with one.

01

Why a written plan

The plan does three jobs: it forces the scoping walk that finds what the outage actually exposed, it gives the AHJ something concrete to accept instead of something vague to question, and it becomes the standard the log gets read against. Watches that start with a plan end with a clean file.

03

The staffing math inside it

The plan is where the route math lives: walk time against the required interval, times coverage hours, equals guard count. Writing it down before the watch starts is what keeps the question from being asked at the worst time, by the person holding the order.

Plan template

The template below fits the whole plan on one page: impairment frame, notification table, watch parameters, and sign-off lines. For complex sites it becomes the cover sheet of a longer package; for most impairments it is the package.

Watch plan questions

Some jurisdictions require formal acceptance; everywhere else, showing the marshal a written plan converts a negotiation into a nod. Get whatever acceptance you can in writing.

Either, together. The provider brings the staffing math and the duties; the facility brings the systems, the boundary, and the contacts.

No. It documents them. Tag the system, run the program, and let the plan be the page that shows both happened.
