Hot Work Permits and the Fire Watch Log, with a Free Template
Hot work burns buildings down after everyone goes home. The permit system exists to make someone check, someone watch, and someone stay.
A hot work permit authorizes one job, in one place, for one period, after the checks: combustibles moved or shielded, openings covered, extinguisher staged, watch briefed. The same sheet carries the watch record and the post-work monitoring, at least half an hour under the common rules and longer where the permit says so, ending in a signed all-clear. NFPA 51B, OSHA’s welding rules, and most insurers all converge on this shape.
Why permits exist
The permit forces a pause between “we need to weld” and the first spark: a named person checks the area, the protections, and the watch before authorizing. It also leaves the paper trail that hot work otherwise never has, which matters because hot work fires surface after the crew leaves.

Post-work monitoring
The minimum under the common rules is half an hour after the work ends, and permits, insurers, and newer consensus editions often require more. The template logs the monitoring rounds and ends with the timed, signed all-clear, the line an adjuster reads first.
One sheet, whole story
Authorization, checks, watch, monitoring, all-clear: one page per job per day. Sites that run this sheet stop having the argument about whether the watch stayed, because the sheet answers it.
Hot work permit questions
If your jurisdiction, insurer, or program requires one, yes, and running the sheet anyway costs one page. The checks are the value; the paper is the proof.
Someone with authority over the area and the training to judge it: facility manager, site supervisor, or the program’s designated person. Not the welder.
The safer answer, and the explicit rule in some settings, is a dedicated watch through the monitoring window. Sparks do not care who is holding the torch case.
