You finish welding a bracket at 4:30 p.m. The arc is out, the leads are coiled, and the crew is ready to leave. But a spark may be sitting inside a wall void, under a floor plate, or in dust above the ceiling. Your fire watch is not finished just because the hot work stopped.
The safe answer to “how long?” is set by the permit, the fire code adopted at your location, the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), and the conditions around the job. Thirty minutes is a common minimum after hot work. Many sites require 60 minutes. High-hazard conditions can call for 120 minutes or longer, followed by periodic monitoring. The permit controls.
The short answer: 30 minutes is a floor, not a universal rule
NFPA 51B, Standard for Fire Prevention During Welding, Cutting, and Other Hot Work, establishes the core hot-work fire prevention program used across the United States. Its traditional baseline is a trained fire watch during hot work and for at least 30 minutes after operations stop. That number is often repeated as if every job ends at minute 30. It does not.
The responsible permit authorizer must evaluate the work area and exposures. The AHJ may adopt a code or local amendment with a longer period. A facility insurer, corporate safety program, general contractor, or owner can also impose a stricter requirement. If the permit says 60 minutes, you keep the watch for 60. If the fire marshal orders two hours, the two-hour direction controls.
Think of the common durations this way:
- 30 minutes: a widely used minimum for ordinary hot work after the final spark, when the area has been properly prepared and no unusual concealed exposure exists.
- 60 minutes: a frequent permit, insurer, or local-code requirement where combustible construction, openings, dust, elevated work, or difficult access raises the chance of delayed ignition.
- 120 minutes: used by some AHJs and facility programs for higher-risk work, significant combustible loading, roof work, impaired protection, or conditions that cannot be fully isolated.
- Longer or periodic monitoring: required when heat can travel into concealed spaces or smoldering material could survive beyond the continuous-watch period.
Never choose a duration from a web article alone. Read the approved hot-work permit and the site plan before the first spark. If the documents conflict, stop and get a ruling from the permit authorizer or AHJ.
What counts as hot work
Hot work is any temporary operation that produces flame, heat, sparks, or hot slag capable of starting a fire. Welding and torch cutting are obvious examples. The category is broader than many crews expect.
- Arc, gas, resistance, and thermite welding
- Oxy-fuel, plasma, and carbon-arc cutting or gouging
- Brazing, soldering, and torch-applied roofing
- Grinding, abrasive cutting, and spark-producing metal work
- Heating frozen lines, removing paint with flame, and using open-flame equipment
- Powder-actuated or similar work when the site program classifies the operation as an ignition source
The label on the tool does not decide the hazard. The output does. A battery grinder can throw sparks farther than the operator sees. Molten metal can roll under machinery. A roofing torch can heat wood below the membrane without leaving a visible flame on top.
Why fires start after the crew packs up
Hot-work fires are often delayed. Sparks enter cracks, penetrations, pipe chases, floor openings, ducts, or wall cavities. Slag lands behind stored material. Conducted heat moves through a steel member and ignites material on the opposite side. A small ember settles in sawdust or insulation and smolders with little smoke.
The fire watch exists to catch that quiet ignition before it becomes a structure fire. The clock starts after all hot-work activity ends, not when the main cut or weld is finished. If the operator strikes another arc, heats another fitting, or resumes grinding, restart the post-work clock after the new final ignition-producing act.
Breaks need attention too. A lunch break is not automatically a safe shutdown. The permit should state whether a continuous watch remains during short interruptions and whether post-work monitoring begins. Do not leave an exposed area unattended because the crew plans to return.
How the AHJ decides between 30, 60, and 120 minutes
The AHJ may be the fire marshal, fire department, building official, or another agency with legal authority. On a large campus, the facility fire prevention manager may also administer the permit program under the adopted code. The decision is risk-based, not arbitrary.
Longer watches are more likely when hot work occurs near combustible roofs, wood framing, foam insulation, wall panels, dust collectors, conveyor systems, cable trays, storage racks, or flammable residues. They are also common when the work is above or beside unprotected openings. Sparks travel down and sideways. Wind can carry them beyond a basic work-zone boundary.
Building conditions matter. Automatic sprinklers or alarms may be impaired. Hose access may be limited. A vacant building can delay discovery. Work in a hospital, refinery, warehouse, high-rise, or occupied construction project creates different evacuation and response problems. The AHJ can lengthen the watch to match those facts.

What the fire watch does while hot work is active
A fire watch is a dedicated safety function. The guard watches for ignition, keeps the work area within sight or follows an approved patrol route, and remains ready to sound the alarm. The guard must know the exact location, how to contact emergency responders, and how to activate the building alarm.
The assigned person needs suitable fire-extinguishing equipment and training in its limitations. Incipient fires may be attacked only when conditions are safe and the site plan allows it. Alarm and evacuation come first when fire spreads, smoke blocks an exit, hazardous materials are involved, or one extinguisher will not control the event.
The watcher should have no competing duty that pulls attention from the hazard. One person cannot safely watch a cutting operation while operating equipment, running materials, or working on another floor. Multiple watchers may be needed when walls, floors, equipment, or distance block the full exposure area.
What changes after the final spark
Post-work watch is active inspection, not standing beside a clock. Start with the immediate work zone. Check below elevated work, both sides of penetrated walls, the opposite side of heat-conducting metal, and every level that could receive sparks. Look behind equipment and stored goods. Smell for scorching. Listen for crackling. Use approved lighting to inspect dark voids.
Watch for smoke, discoloration, bubbling coatings, unusual heat, alarm activation, or a rising temperature at an exposure. Thermal imaging can help when the site permits it, but it does not replace physical inspection or the required watch. Reflective metal, deep insulation, and obstructed cavities can hide heat from a camera.
At the end of continuous watch, some programs require periodic checks for several additional hours. A typical site may call for inspections every 30 minutes, but the schedule must come from the permit or written policy. Record each round. If heat, smoke, odor, or another concern appears, summon help and extend monitoring under the permit authorizer’s direction.
Prepare the area before issuing the permit
The best fire watch starts with hazard removal. Move combustible material away from the work when possible. Protect what cannot be moved with listed welding curtains, pads, blankets, or guards suited to the operation. Cover floor and wall openings. Seal paths that could carry sparks into concealed spaces. Sweep combustible dust and debris.
Inspect the other side of walls, floors, partitions, and metal surfaces. Isolate conveyors and ducts that could transport sparks. Confirm that extinguishers are charged and accessible. Verify that alarms, sprinklers, standpipes, and fire pumps are in service unless an approved impairment plan provides alternate protection.
Move the job to a designated hot-work area when the hazard cannot be controlled in place. If explosive atmospheres, uncontrolled flammable vapors, or heavy combustible dust are present, hot work should not begin. A fire watch is not a substitute for correcting an unsafe atmosphere.
Document the watch so the record matches the work
A strong log connects the permit to a real person, place, and period. Record the permit number, exact location, type of hot work, operator, fire-watch name, start time, stop time, required post-work duration, and final release time. Note inspection rounds, conditions found, corrective actions, alarm or extinguisher use, and the person who closed the permit.
Use actual times. Do not pre-fill the final inspection. If work restarts, document the new stop time and restart the monitoring clock. If watchers change shifts, record the handoff and verify that the incoming guard understands every exposure. Retain the form under the facility policy and any AHJ requirement.

Common hot-work fire watch violations
- Ending at shutdown: the watcher leaves when welding stops instead of completing the post-work period.
- Using a blanket 30-minute rule: the crew ignores a 60- or 120-minute permit condition.
- Starting the clock too early: monitoring begins after the main weld even though grinding or reheating continues.
- Missing hidden exposures: nobody checks the opposite side of a wall, the floor below, or a roof assembly.
- Assigning other work: the watcher drives equipment, handles tools, or leaves to collect supplies.
- Poor coverage: one person is assigned to areas that cannot all be observed or reached promptly.
- Unready equipment: the extinguisher is missing, blocked, discharged, or wrong for the hazard.
- Weak records: times are estimated later, rounds are skipped, or the permit closes without a final inspection.
- Treating the watch as hazard control: combustibles remain in place even though they could have been removed or protected.
Supervisors should audit these points in the field. A signed permit does not prove the area is safe. The actual conditions and conduct of the watch do.
A practical decision sequence for your next hot-work job
First, identify the adopted code, AHJ instructions, facility policy, and insurer rules. Second, inspect the full spark and heat exposure area, including concealed and adjacent spaces. Third, remove or protect combustibles and confirm fire-protection systems are available. Fourth, state the continuous-watch and follow-up monitoring periods on the permit. Fifth, assign trained people with no distracting duties. Finally, close the permit only after the required inspections are complete and documented.
If any condition changes, reassess. New materials may enter the area. Wind may rise during roof work. A sprinkler impairment may begin. A wall may be opened and reveal combustible insulation. Stop the job when the permit no longer matches reality, correct the hazard, and issue or amend authorization before resuming.
