You finish welding a steel support at 4:30 p.m. The arc goes dark. The crew starts rolling leads and loading tools. Ten feet away, one spark has slipped through a pipe opening and landed in dust above a suspended ceiling. Nothing is smoking yet.
This is why fire watch does not end with the final weld. The required watch may continue for 30, 60, or 120 minutes, and some jobs need periodic checks after that. The approved hot-work permit, local code, authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), and actual site conditions set the time. A crew should never pick the shortest number because it fits the schedule.
How long is fire watch required after hot work?
Thirty minutes after hot work is a common baseline. It is not a universal release time. NFPA 51B has long supplied the basic framework for hot-work fire prevention, including a trained fire watch during the operation and a minimum post-work watch. The edition adopted in your jurisdiction, local amendments, permit terms, and facility rules may require more.
If your permit says 60 minutes, the watch stays for 60 minutes after the last spark-producing activity. If the fire marshal requires two hours, that direction controls. An insurer, hospital safety office, industrial owner, or general contractor can also impose a longer period than the local minimum.
- 30 minutes is often used for ordinary work in a prepared area with controlled combustibles and no concealed exposure.
- 60 minutes is common where sparks can reach openings, elevated surfaces, combustible construction, dust, or difficult inspection points.
- 120 minutes or longer may be ordered for roof work, concealed voids, heavy fuel loading, impaired fire protection, or other high-hazard conditions.
- Periodic monitoring may follow the continuous watch when a permit calls for later rounds to catch slow, hidden ignition.
The clock begins only after every hot-work operation has stopped. Grinding a rough weld, reheating a fitting, or making one final cut resets it. Record the new stop time and begin the full post-work period again.
Why the permit and AHJ control the clock
The AHJ is the agency or official with legal authority over the site. That may be a fire marshal, fire department, building official, or another designated office. The AHJ applies the fire code adopted locally. There is no single national duration that overrides every local adoption and permit condition.
The permit authorizer should inspect the work area before approving the job. That review covers nearby combustibles, wall and floor openings, construction type, sprinkler and alarm status, extinguisher access, ventilation, weather, and spaces above, below, and behind the work. The required watch time should appear on the permit before tools are energized.
When two instructions differ, use the stricter direction until the permit authorizer or AHJ resolves the conflict. Do not settle the issue at the work face with a verbal guess. Put the ruling on the permit or in the site record.

Hot work includes more than welding
Hot work is temporary work that produces flame, high heat, sparks, or slag capable of starting a fire. Welding and torch cutting are obvious. Grinding, brazing, soldering, thawing pipe with a torch, torch-applied roofing, and abrasive cutting can create the same delayed fire problem.
A grinder may throw sparks beyond the visible work zone. Molten metal can roll under machinery. Heat can travel through a steel beam and ignite material on the other side of a wall. Roofing flame can heat wood below a membrane without showing an open flame at the surface.
Tool labels do not define the exposure. Watch the path of sparks and conducted heat. If that path reaches combustible material or a concealed space, the permit must address it.
Delayed ignition is the reason you stay
Hot-work fires often start quietly. Sparks drop through deck gaps, floor penetrations, pipe chases, ducts, cable openings, and cracks at wall joints. Slag hides behind stock or equipment. An ember settles into sawdust, insulation, roofing material, or accumulated dust and smolders without a visible flame.
Thirty minutes can be enough in a clean, open, well-protected area. It may be too short where the watcher cannot see the entire exposure. Longer continuous watch and later inspection rounds give hidden heat time to show itself while someone is still assigned to act.
Breaks count. A lunch break is not an automatic release from watch duty. Follow the permit for short interruptions. Never leave a hot-work area unobserved because the operator plans to return soon.
Conditions that support a longer fire watch
Combustible construction deserves extra attention. Wood framing, foam insulation, roof assemblies, composite panels, and old wall cavities can hold heat out of view. Elevated work creates exposure on lower levels. A single watcher may not be able to see the work face, floor below, and opposite side of a partition at the same time.
Industrial sites add conveyors, dust collectors, cable trays, process residue, and hard-to-reach equipment spaces. Hospitals and occupied high-rises add evacuation limits and continuity concerns. Warehouses may have tall racks that hide travel paths for sparks. Wind can carry hot particles outside the original boundary during roof or exterior work.
An impaired sprinkler, alarm, standpipe, or fire pump changes the risk calculation. NFPA 25 addresses inspection, testing, maintenance, and impairment handling for water-based fire protection systems. A building with impaired protection may need a separate impairment fire watch in addition to hot-work controls. The AHJ should decide the required coverage.

What the watcher does during the job
The fire watcher has one job: detect ignition early and start the emergency response. The watcher keeps the exposure area under observation, knows how to activate the building alarm, has a reliable way to call the fire department, and knows the site address and exact work location.
Suitable extinguishing equipment must be close and ready. The watcher may attack a small, beginning-stage fire only when trained, conditions are safe, and the site procedure allows it. If smoke blocks an exit, fire spreads, hazardous material is involved, or one extinguisher cannot control it, the watcher sounds the alarm and evacuates.
Do not give the watcher another assignment that steals attention. Operating a lift, handling material, running for supplies, or covering unrelated security rounds can leave the hot-work exposure unwatched. Use more than one person when floors, walls, machinery, or distance block the view.
What changes after the final spark
Post-work watch is an active inspection. Start at the work face, then follow every reasonable path taken by sparks, slag, or conducted heat. Check below elevated work. Inspect both sides of walls and floors. Look behind stored material, machinery, curtains, and temporary barriers. Examine adjacent rooms and ceiling spaces covered by the permit.
Use your senses. Look for haze, smoke, discoloration, bubbling paint, or glowing material. Smell for scorching. Listen for crackling. Carefully check for unusual heat without exposing yourself to burns or electrical hazards. Thermal imaging can support an inspection where site rules permit it, but reflective metal and deep insulation can hide heat from a camera.
If the permit requires later rounds, record each one at the specified time. Do not pre-fill a log. A new odor, warm surface, alarm signal, or visible smoke calls for immediate action and a reset of the plan. Notify the permit authorizer and AHJ as required.
Prepare the area before the first spark
Fire watch is the last line of defense, not permission to leave preventable hazards in place. Move combustible stock, trash, dust, and debris away from the work. Protect fixed material with listed welding curtains, blankets, pads, or guards suited to the operation. Cover openings that could carry sparks into another space.
Inspect the opposite side of walls, floors, metal partitions, and structural members. Isolate ducts and conveyors that could move sparks. Confirm extinguishers are charged and accessible. Check that automatic sprinklers, alarms, standpipes, and fire pumps are in service, or that an approved impairment plan supplies alternate protection.
Move the work into a designated hot-work area when practical. Stop entirely if flammable vapor, an explosive atmosphere, uncontrolled combustible dust, or another prohibited condition exists. A watcher cannot make an unsafe atmosphere acceptable.
Keep a record that matches the actual watch
The log should connect the permit to a person, place, and time. Record the permit number, exact work location, operation, operator, watcher, start time, final hot-work stop time, required watch duration, later rounds, conditions found, and release time. Note any extinguisher use, alarm, corrective action, or transfer between watchers.
A supervisor should be able to reconstruct the job from that record. If work restarts, show the new stop time. If a relief watcher takes over, document the handoff and review every exposure. Close the permit only after the final required inspection is complete.
Common mistakes that end the watch too soon
The most common mistake is treating 30 minutes as an automatic rule. A crew hears that number during training and ignores the 60-minute entry printed on the permit. The written condition wins. Supervisors should review the duration during the pre-job briefing and again when hot work stops.
Another mistake is starting the clock after the main weld while a worker continues to grind, braze, or heat nearby material. The post-work period starts after the final source of sparks or hazardous heat stops. One quick touch-up restarts the full clock.
Weak coverage also causes early releases. One watcher may remain near the operator but never inspect the floor below, room behind the wall, or roof space under the torch. The permit authorizer should divide the area into observable zones and assign enough people to cover them.
Finally, do not confuse the end of continuous watch with the end of all monitoring. Some programs shift to documented periodic checks after the dedicated watch. Missing those rounds leaves the job incomplete even though the watcher finished the first assigned period.
A decision sequence for property managers
- Confirm the locally adopted code, AHJ direction, insurance terms, and facility hot-work policy.
- Inspect the full heat and spark exposure, including floors below and concealed spaces.
- Remove or protect combustibles and verify the status of fire protection systems.
- Write the continuous watch time and any later monitoring rounds on the permit.
- Assign trained watchers with proper equipment and no conflicting duties.
- Restart the clock whenever spark-producing or heat-producing work resumes.
- Document each round and close the permit only after the authorized release time.
Reassess when the site changes. A wall may be opened and reveal foam insulation. New storage may block a patrol route. Wind may rise during roof work. A sprinkler impairment may begin. Stop the operation when the permit no longer matches the conditions, correct the problem, and obtain revised authorization before work resumes.
