Your impairment tag went up at 6 a.m. The alarm company’s outage window says four hours. Your night supervisor asks the obvious question: how often does the guard actually have to walk the building? Nobody on site has a number, and the fire marshal’s inspector is due back before the sprinkler contractor finishes.
There is no universal patrol interval written into a single national code. The frequency comes from whichever document is actually governing your watch: the fire marshal’s order, your facility’s impairment or interim life safety measure (ILSM) plan, or your insurer’s program. Hourly rounds are common in practice, but 15-minute and 30-minute intervals appear in plenty of real orders. The number that matters is the one written down for your building, not an industry rule of thumb.
The governing document sets the clock, not a universal code number
No single fire code hands every building the same patrol interval. Under the International Fire Code (IFC) framework and the local authority having jurisdiction’s (AHJ) adopted edition, a fire marshal’s order typically names the frequency outright when one is issued. Where NFPA 25 governs a sprinkler impairment, the interval usually comes from the facility’s written impairment program rather than the standard itself dictating a single number nationwide. Healthcare facilities running an ILSM plan under Joint Commission accreditation set their own patrol clock inside that plan, subject to the AHJ’s override authority.
That local-adoption caveat matters more than most property managers expect. The same event — a sprinkler shutdown, a fire alarm outage, a hot work permit — can carry a different documented interval in two neighboring jurisdictions, because each AHJ adopts and enforces its own code edition and applies its own enforcement culture on top of it. A fire marshal in one county might name thirty-minute rounds as a matter of routine practice; a fire marshal one county over might require continuous coverage for the identical impairment type. Treat “how often” as a question your governing document answers for your specific building, not a fact you can look up once online and reuse everywhere.

The correct sequence runs the other direction: find the document that governs the watch, read the number it states (or the process it sets for you to propose one), and staff to that number — not to a generic industry default.
Three sources typically set the interval property managers actually see
In practice, the frequency traces back to one of three places. A fire marshal’s order often names rounds and hours directly — thirty minutes, hourly, continuous coverage — and that language controls once it’s issued. An impairment or ILSM plan lets the facility propose its own clock, with the adopted code and the AHJ retaining override authority if the proposal falls short of what the situation demands. An insurer’s program sets its own terms for property protection, separate from what the AHJ requires, and satisfying one does not automatically satisfy the other — a building can pass its fire marshal’s requirement and still fail its carrier’s terms if the two documents specify different intervals.
When nothing is written down — no order, no plan, no carrier requirement naming a number — the answer is not to guess. Ask the AHJ directly and document the answer you receive in an email or a signed note. A verbal assumption about “probably hourly” does not hold up when an inspector asks to see the interval in writing after the fact, and it leaves the property with no defense if a fire occurs during a round that happened later than a stricter, unstated expectation would have required.
Route math decides whether one guard can cover the interval at all
Naming an interval is only half the problem. The other half is whether a single guard can physically walk the required route inside that window. Walk the route yourself, at patrol pace with the checks the watch requires, not a casual stroll through the building. If that walk takes forty minutes and the order requires rounds every thirty minutes, one guard is already behind before the first shift starts — the math fails regardless of how experienced or fast the guard is.
The calculation itself is simple arithmetic, even though the inputs vary by building:
Route walk time (minutes) compared against the required interval (minutes) = whether one guard covers it. If route time is less than or equal to the interval, one guard can complete the round with time to spare before the next one starts. If route time exceeds the interval, the watch needs either a second guard splitting the route or a revised plan submitted to the AHJ.
Building size, elevator or stairwell reality, and the number of separate wings or floors all feed into that route time. A route that is walkable in a single-story warehouse in twenty minutes might take three times as long in a high-rise with bank-of-elevator delays and multiple stairwells to check on the way down. When the math says one guard cannot do it, the answer is more guards — not a longer interval
Several conditions reliably push a watch past what one person can cover. Recognizing them before the watch starts — not after a missed round gets flagged — is the difference between a compliant plan and one that fails review:
- Route time exceeds the interval the order or plan requires.
- Multiple buildings or clearly separated wings sit on one property, splitting attention in a way no single guard can manage on foot.
- Hot work is running at the same time as a system impairment — two separate triggers that each need a dedicated point of focus, not one guard alternating between them.
- High-rise coverage spans many floors, multiplying both walking distance and elevator wait time between checks.
- The impairment runs a full 24 hours, which requires relief coverage built into the staffing plan — nobody patrols continuously for a full day alone, and a plan that assumes otherwise fails review the moment someone checks the math against the clock.
Facilities sometimes assume they can thin out coverage overnight when a building empties. That assumption only holds if the governing document explicitly allows it. Lower occupancy changes the risk profile a fire watch is protecting against, but it does not change what the order requires — the order is the requirement, and occupancy is only context the AHJ may or may not have already factored in when writing it.
A round is a planned route with proof, not a person standing near the risk
A fire watch guard is not a static presence positioned near the hazard. Every round follows a route that was walked and written down before the first shift started — which floors, which rooms, which corners the impairment left unprotected, where the extinguishers and exits sit, where dead zones with no phone signal exist. That planned route becomes part of the watch record, so anyone reviewing the log later can see not just that rounds happened, but exactly what each round covered and in what order.
Each round checks the areas the impairment exposed, ignition sources like hot work zones or temporary heat equipment, exit routes and door operability, and anything that changed since the previous round. The guard logs a timestamped entry at each checkpoint, and on sites that require it, GPS verification turns “rounds were made” into a record that is difficult to dispute months later when a claim or an inspection reopens the question. Three coverage models fit different situations
Continuous coverage means constant movement through the covered area for as long as the order or plan calls for it — no fixed base point, no gap between passes. This model applies when the governing document requires it explicitly, usually for higher-hazard impairments or larger occupied buildings.
Interval rounds are timed circuits between a fixed base point — the shape most long-running impairments actually take. The guard returns to a known base point between each walk, logs the round, and moves out on the next timed circuit. This is the model most sprinkler and alarm impairments end up using once the interval is set.
A fixed post applies to a single concentrated hazard, like an active hot work job, where the guard covers the work area and its immediate exposures — adjoining spaces, the far side of shared walls, the floor above and below — rather than walking a full building circuit. Which model applies depends on what triggered the watch: a building-wide sprinkler outage usually calls for interval rounds across the whole protected area, while a single welding job inside an otherwise normal building usually calls for a fixed post at that location instead of a full-building patrol.
What “how often” looks like across a few common trigger types
The interval question shows up differently depending on what triggered the watch in the first place. A sprinkler impairment for routine maintenance often runs on a facility-proposed interval inside a written NFPA 25 impairment program — commonly hourly rounds, but the plan document is what actually controls, not the standard’s general framework. A fire marshal’s emergency order after an alarm failure, by contrast, frequently states the interval outright in the order itself, sometimes tighter than what a facility would have proposed on its own, because the marshal is responding to an active life-safety gap rather than a scheduled maintenance window.
A hot work permit under NFPA 51B typically calls for continuous fixed-post coverage during the work itself, plus a defined post-work watch window — commonly a period after the last spark before the area is declared clear, though the exact duration is set by the permit and the AHJ, not a single number that applies everywhere. Construction-site fire watches under NFPA 241 often blend approaches: continuous coverage during active work, shifting to interval rounds during off-hours when the site is unoccupied but still under a fire-watch requirement.
The common thread across every one of these examples is the same: identify which document is actually governing your specific watch before assuming an interval, and confirm that document states a number you can point to later.
Get the interval and the staffing number in writing before the watch starts
Whatever number applies to your building — fifteen minutes, thirty minutes, hourly, continuous — get it in writing before the first guard clocks in. A written plan should state, at minimum:
- The patrol interval and who set it (AHJ order, facility plan, or insurer program).
- The staffing count, with the route-time math that justifies it.
- The coverage model — continuous, interval rounds, or fixed post.
- Relief and shift-change coverage for any impairment running past a single shift.
- Who signed off on the plan, and the date.
That written record is what answers the question when someone asks later why the watch ran the way it did. A verbal understanding between the property manager and the guard company does not survive a records request or an insurance dispute — the AHJ, the insurer, or a plaintiff’s attorney will ask for the document, not a recollection of a phone call.
Before requesting a quote, walk your own route and time it. Know your square footage, floor count, and whether elevators or stairs will slow a guard down between checkpoints. Ask your AHJ directly if no order or plan already states an interval, and get that answer in writing too.
